Holding The Instrument

When you learn the guitar, the first thing you’re going to need to learn is how to hold the instrument, for comfort and practicallity.

Firstly, place the instrument under the crook of your right arm so that your right hand is directly over the hole where the strings are. Note that this is for right handed players.

Secondly, place your left hand along the fret, or the arm of the guitar. You should hold the guitar so that your left thumb rests along the top of the fret bar, allowing all of your fingers easy access to the strings along the fret.

Now you should practice strumming the guitar, without learning any of the actual notes or chords yet, so that you get comfortable holding and playing the instrument.

Learning How To Tune It

Perhaps the most important aspect of learning the guitar is tuning the instrument. When the instrument is playing each note correctly, it means the guitar is properly ‘tuned’. If the guitar not in tune, then every note will be wrong and you won’t be playing properly. Then the sound will be off and you will soon become frustrated and quit, because you will think it’s you that’s not doing something right.Don't dispair it’s not you, you just have to tune the instrument.

The best way to learn how to tune the instrument is by ear, or you can do like a lot of new players and buy an electric tuner. An electric tuner will automatically determine if the guitar is in tune. You simply strum each string and then adjust the guitar until the tuner registers that everything’s in the right position.

But it’s very important to get those few basics down because even one bad habit can make it very difficult to learn guitar and to use the instrument to its fullest potential with a shot of confidence.
